That's what half the job applications I get back say... The other half says I don't have enough published papers in top journals.

Don't put yourself down dude. First off, it takes 3 years to get a paper in a top journal, on average, and you haven't been at it that long. Second, you'll get there soon enough. I'd enjoy the student-hood for as long as I could if I were you: job-world is mostly a pain in the arse compared to being a PhD student. If the missus would take the hit on living standards, I'd register for another PhD tomorrow.
