QUALIFICATIONS:
A PhD or equivalent in economics, statistics, demography, or a related discipline is essential.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Contract is to produce models of the European periphery’s economic, financial, and social spheres, in areas as diverse as sovereign debt modeling, pension policy reform, debt restructuring, the relation between assets and income, inter- and intra-generational inequality, and the structure of social relations. The key outputs of the project will be a series of empirically based models linking demography and debt in the peripheral nations of Europe that can inform policy makers across the periphery.
DESCRIPTION:
Applicants are invited for the above post, starting August 1st, 2013 or soon thereafter, funded by The Institute for New Economic Thinking (www.ineteconomics.org). The successful candidates will be required to work as part of a large interdisciplinary team supervised by Dr Stephen Kinsella in developing data-based models to understand the evolution of debt and demography in the European periphery. The project will study debt and its relationships to fertility and pensions systems, productivity and migration, welfare systems and inter/intra generational equity across Europe’s periphery.
Essential:
• PhD in economics, statistics, demography or a related discipline;
• Experience in empirical modelling and estimation.
Desirable:
• Previously published peer reviewed work in cognate field journals.
• Computer programming experience with some or all of the following: MATLAB, Eviews, R, Mathematica.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• The successful candidate will be expected to work independently, contribute to leading the research direction, and supervise and direct the work of others, particularly PhD students in the team.
• The ability to write scientific publications, research reports and proposals as well as make presentations to funding bodies and at conferences.
