Gerard at Turbulence Ahead posts a nice piece of news that a school in Dublin is to give it's students ebook readers. I'm all for this sort of thing, mainly because I'm a nerd, but also because I think technologies like this help students learn.

But why just an ebook reader? Why not give every kid in the class a netbook and see what happens?

Think OLPC, but for the children of the developed countries.

I'm currently reading Born Digital, a book all about our children as the first generation born into a fully digital culture, and what that means. It makes for great reading, and throws our education system into relief as the 19th Century construction it really is.

Also, this teacher is now using Google Docs to help his students learn how to collaborate on projects. The students are 10.

It is instructive that when I was 10, the Commodore 64 was the best computer the average middle class kid could get his hands on. Now? a 1.6ghz, 1gig ram, 80gb hard drive, 1lb machine can be bought in Dunnes Stores for 299 euros, less than the cost of a games console.

We live in the future, we really do.
