A couple of articles from Paul Saffo recently in San Francisco chronicle which you may find interesting, if you are into that kind of thing. Actually, I was looking for that old Paul Romer on growth podcast, and for some reason I mixed him up with Saffo. I think they have worked in similar fields of study, but maybe in a different way.
It might offer an insight into what is going on in other cities across the globe. Saffo was a guy I used to read a while back, and I was just browsing through some of his later stuff now.
Service sharing essential in era of deep deficits. San Francisco Chronicle - November 7, 2010 (PDF Version:836K)
The Bay Area needs to act like a city-state. San Francisco Chronicle - July 11, 2010 (PDF Version:1.3M)
On a related note, to the above, you might find this of interest. A talking interview with the president of Stanford John Hennessy and John Saffo. I watched it again last night for the second time, and it is quite interesting the amount of issues they discuss in relation to how universities and industry co-exist together in their part of the world.
